About reducing the BCH block time, I have something to say...

I want to introduce myself by first (to avoid to be considered to be troll).
My name is Danny, Chinese, my first contact with Bitcoin was in 2013. My background is integrated circuit design. I studied C/C++ and linux in the college 15 years ago. I am not very familiar with open source software design, but my technology background is good enough to let me learn things quickly. I have developed a FPGA based SHA-256 miner and succesfully connect to the Eligius pool in early 2014 (Just for fun), all by C and verilog. I am a developer but not a professional software developer.
I am familiar with Bitcoin, transaction and block structure. I developed a program which can upload and download arbitrary file from/to the Bitcoincash blockchain. The downloader code is open sourced:
I think I am not a troll.
Although many users and devs think Blocktime is not an issue, but a simple fact is that there is no single mainstream crypto choose a blocktime equal or larger than 10 minutes (No offense to anyone, I just express the idea that this is an undeniable proof that a shortter confirmation time has real needs).
For wallet users: If someone send me some BCH, although 0-conf gives some confidence, but I still need to wait for at least 1 confirmation to "make sure" someone else is not cheeting me (not 100%, but 1 confirm really means something), each more confirmation makes more confidence.
For nodes: You cannot spend a unconfirmed UTXO by default, you need to list the unspent UTXO and use createrawtransaction, signrawtransaction to manually create the TX and broadcast it. That means you need to wait for the TX to be confirmed before spend it by default.
Variance: (Here, I want to say sorry to many people especially some devs, in the previous posts, I did not show enough respect to them. In fact, the developers have done a lot of excellent work, most of which are unpaid, but not well known to the public.) The Variance is already been discussed by devs a long time, bobtail algorithm is a potential alternative, I have not figure it out by now, but reduce the block time can achieve a similar result, it's simple, 10 1-min block have an averagy effect, it has much less variance than 1 10-min block.
For exchanges: Obviously the exchanges plays the most important role in the crypto eco-system. Exchanges usually run "official" bitcoin cash nodes (bitcoin-abc), change the block time does not affect them (because the RPC call is not changed), the only affection is that they need to increase the confirmation numbers for deposit.
For developers: They need to upgrade the software before the HF just as the previous ones. Although change the blocktime is a major change, but in Code, the changes are rare, only a few lines of codes are affected for the core functions. (To approve this, I created a Bitcoin-abc fork in github, modified the blocktime to 2-min and reduce the subsidy to 1/5 at the same time, all the changes canbe seen here: I spend 1 week to study the source code, and spend 2 days to complete the modification (Changes for test-code and some non-core functions are not completed yet), and 3 days for run the test (includes run a pool and connect to the testnet, in here you can find the blocks I mined in the testnet: I am not a professional programmer but can finish the core changes within 2-weeks, so it is clear that the change does not need much work.
In summary, I think change the blocktime maybe not the perfect consensus change for BCH, but that is the simplest one to improve the user experience significantly.
BTW: Anyone, especially developers who are interested in this topic, you can find the telegram group link here:

Got a 0 on an assignment about Bitcoin for it not being "age appropriate!"

Hello people of Reddit. I'm an 8th grade student of a Cyber School. I am very familiar with Bitcoin. I maintain my parents' 2 KnCMiner Jupiters. I have also traded it at an exchange. I'd say I'm pretty familiar with the coin.
In my English class, about 2 weeks ago, I was told to make a "how-to" document on something I know how to do. So, I made it on Bitcoin mining. I spent a few hours working on it, making sure it was the best thing I had ever worked on. Finally, I submitted it. Then, I checked the grade the next day.
After a document is submitted, it will say "0%" next to it, until it's graded. So, I when I saw this, I thought, "oh well. Still hasn't been graded." But I clicked on it just to make sure it wasn't actually a 0. Well, it was. I was so confused. I wondered if I submitted the wrong document. Now, you can see what the teacher said about the document. She said it was not "age appropriate!" I then got mad. As I read on, she said, for an 8th grade student, I should write about "cleaning my room" or "washing the car." Well, then i got EXTREMELY mad. Something I had worked so hard on, given a 0% because I had not written about something a 3rd grader knows how to do.
Then came yesterday. We had to write a follow-up assignment on the topic we wrote about. So, I headed the document stating the truth that many kids my age mine Bitcoin with their computers, and that many of my friends want to know how to also. I submitted the document and waited. So, went back to check the grade and said "0%." I think you already know what's going to happen next. I checked it and, big surprise, I got a 0. This time, it was a bit different. She said she understands how I "feel" that it's age appropriate. Then she said what I got very, very, angry at. She stated that if I write about abortion, drugs, sexuality, or any other non age appropriate topic, that it will be automatically given a 0% grade. So, yeah. Bitcoin's like killing babies and being gay, I guess?
Tell me what you guys think about this. If you want, you can vote this up to spread the word. But thanks for reading this guys. :)
So, you guys wanted to see the document. Well, here it is:
How to Mine Bitcoin
Short on money? Want to make some extra dough for the holiday season? Try Bitcoin! Bitcoin is an online digital currency. Right now, 1 Bitcoin is worth $640! But, did you know that you can create these coins, and help the network at the same time? This is a process called “mining,” and you can do it too! You're only going to need a few things for this. Firstly, I recommend not trying to mine with your home computer. You need a somewhat expensive machine called an ASIC. ASIC stands for application specific integrated circuit. This is just fancy talk for a very power computer that can only mine Bitcoin. Now, these range anywhere from $15 to $25,000, but I have a recommendation for you. It's called a KnCMiner Jupiter, and it's very fast. They're only $5K, which may seem expensive at first, but you can mine about half a Bitcoin PER DAY! That's over $300! You're also going to need a power supply. I recommend a Cooler Master V850. That's what I use. Next, you need an Ethernet cable, plugged into the router and miner. Finally you need a Bitcoin wallet. It can be on your computer or from Get your address, beginning with a 1, ready! Now comes mining. First, find the miner's IP address. Go to your router's homepage – which is normally – and look for something like “Connected Devices.” Then, it should be labeled “Jupiter” and then some numbers. Then go to the address that it says it is. This may be, or something like that. Now, it will say to log in. Log in with the username and password “admin.” This should bring a page up with numbers. You're done with that. Now, go to the mining tab. For the pool, use “” without the quotes. Then, for the user, put your Bitcoin address. For the password field, put a simple “x.” It can be anything, but x is simple to remember. The pool could go down at any time, so be prepared! Get an account at, and make a worker. It shows this on the site. Then connect the miner using the stratum address. Also, be prepared for your earnings to slowly go down. There is a new difficulty every week, which it means it's harder to get a coin. But, don't worry! The price is going up. 2 years ago, it was worth $6! It's gone up over 100x since then! Also, that's the other thing. The price may crash. If it does, don't fret! The price will be back up over that in no time! One more thing before this ends. Bitcoin is NOT illegal. Nor is mining. The US government actually has no problem if you use Bitcoin, as long as you use it legally. There are multiple sites that you can buy contraband, like drugs and guns. Stay away from these sites! In conclusion, Bitcoin is an amazing thing. I mine it myself with a KnCMiner Jupiter. There may be some risks, but they're like any job. I've actually paid off the miner in less than 1 month! So, Bitcoin can really help our economy. It can help the WORLD economy!
Also, thanks guys for all the support! :)
EDIT #2:
"A" Cyber School is just like homeschool. I stay at home and do my work on the computer. The only contact with teachers is situations like this. When I have an assignment to submit.
EDIT #3:
I am not saying being gay and abortion are bad. If anything, some of my best friends are gay. I'm putting this in words that she would use. Not mine.
Well, you guys think it's fake. I edited the files down so it wouldn't reveal any personal info of the teacher or myself. Here you go:

One dev's opinion: Enabling mining pool policy experimentation

A new Bitcoin Core (aka bitcoind) feature enables miner policy experimentation: The pull request was opened in July 2012 and merged in the past 24 hours.
This feature enables the local mining policy to artificially prefer (or avoid) certain transactions. Primarily, this will be used by the miner to ensure that a local transaction is mined, regardless of attached fees.
(warning: personal opinion ahead; speaking for myself, not my employer or other devs)
It has always seemed likely to me that a mature mining market would feature contractual agreements with outside, non-mining entities to mine certain types of transactions. This is a natural outgrowth of free market competition between miners (aka mining pools), for services that benefit the bitcoin community.
Many bitcoin mining pools supplement their income via merged mining. Some pools are forming agreements with enterprise-scale miners, or chip makers. As many different bitcoin applications come online, miners will likely compete for transaction-related services as well. This feature, JSON-RPC API call "prioritisetransaction", enables competition on a per-transaction granularity.

Bitcoin devs do NOT have consensus on blocksize

I am making this post to show to the public what the most active developers in Bitcoin, more specifically Bitcoin Core, think about block size increases. Contrary to what the public may think, there is no consensus amongst the developers regarding Gavin Andresen’s proposal to increase the block size to 20mb (Thanks to Peter Todd who brought this up during his Bitdevs NYC talk which I attended). The only devs that have come out in strong favor of this proposal is Gavin and Mike Hearn.
The rest are against any increase, prefer a smaller increase, or have not expressed an opinion either way but is asking for further research, development, and answers before we proceed. I believe that the public opinion has been highly swayed by Gavin, and we should strongly consider what others who have spent numerous hours on the protocol have to say on the topic. If any information here is inaccurate , or if there are others who I’ve missed , please let me know and I will edit them in. I’ve probably missed a lot of good comments from other developers because it is scattered all over the internet and my google-fu is not good (And please excuse my ham fisted way of labeling developer contribution by the # of commits on github. ).
I also apologize in advance if any developers feel like they are being called out. But I believe strongly that it's important to have public statements that have been made on the internet to be consolidated in one place for such an important topic. Especially when we have dangerous misconceptions where users think that increasing blocksize is a single parameter optimization with no costs like increasing the size of your race car engine. The topic of block size is not a technical issue, it is a political issue at heart. There are real trade offs involved, with people and entities who stands to gain on both sides of the debate.

Ghash @ 41% (again)

No one cares anymore? This is almost as high as a week ago, an event that filled the front page of bitcoin.
Does this mean that miners have moved back from other pools to Ghash? Eligius has dropped a few % after gaining the same amount, just to give an example
Would it mostly be their own hashing power thats increasing through

What are "smaller" pools, such as Eligius, thinking regarding Classic?

I created this merely as a way for people on smaller pools to voice their concerns regarding the allegiance of their preference. Eligius, for example, has only a meagre 13,000 Th/s, compared to F2Pool's 130 Ph/s, but I'd still like to know where they weigh in. Every little helps in the consensus and will go toward giving the hard fork to Classic, at least for the time being, unanimous support across the board.
Are there any other smaller pools that we could ask to clarify their stance for additional support?

Is Blockstream's Luke-Jr the only person to ever mount a 51% attack? Is Blockstream projecting about this too?

I read the following in this (oldish) article:
Luke-Jr has shown this in practice when he successfully attacked an altcoin while controlling the Eligius mining pool.
Anyone know if this is false? Are the Blockstream/Core boys the only ones who actually did this?
Is this persistent FUD about the danger of miners taking control just another Blockstream projection?

Some basic analysis of the "Gox source code"

First of all, I'm not a PHP expert, so I'm not going to comment on the quality of the code, and please lets have no discussions about the merits of using PHP/MySQL for an exchange site. I'm just interested in what this chunk of code does, so if anyone else can elaborate/correct my points please do.
Also, whilst this might sound like a post for a dev site I think some of the info will interest those involved in the Gox debacle.

Is the Blockstream company the reason why 4 core developer won´t increase the blocksize?

So what do you think about my theory, while about 80% of the bitcoin community vote yes for bigger blocksize, some bitcoin core devs won´t . source:
Core Developer Gregory Maxwell, Pieter Wuille, Matt Corallo and Luke Dashjr are involved in the company Blockstream, source: They got a $21M seed round, source:
Their opinion about bigger blocksize:

Luke Dashjr Current Affiliations: Eligius Mining Pool Bitcoin Core: top 10 core developer by # of commits Comments:
They want Blockstream being successful and are already working with the lightning network, which provides an alternative for scaling the blocksize: About lighning network:
Maybe they are financially motivated to not increasing the blocksize. Gregory Maxwell, Pieter Wuille, Matt Corallo annd Luke Dashjr doesn´t want bigger blocksize because they want to be successful with their Blockstream company which is about sidechains, source:
Nothing against Blockstream, but prevent bigger blocksize to force the bitcoin community using Blockstream, respective sidechains might be a big reason why this gentlemens stand against bigger blocksize, isn´t it?
I hope someone more technical can schedule on my theory.

Btcguild shutting down.

After many months of consideration, I have finally made the choice to announce the planned closure of BTC Guild. Below, I've outlined the closure process/timeline and reasons that this decision was made.
Closure Timeframe and Process As identified in the support section and in the 2nd post on this thread, BTC Guild has had an official policy for the amount of time that will be given in the event of closure. The official date that BTC Guild will cease all business is January 31, 2015. This post is the start of the identified 3 months of warning.
1) Effective immediately, registrations are closed to new users. 2) BTC Guild mining servers will remain online until November 30, 2014. 3) Users will have until 11:59 PM (PST) on January 31, 2015 to withdraw any remaining balances on their account.
The above timeline may change if BTC Guild is sold prior to the planned date of closure.
Main Reasons for Closure 1) Risk/cost of a successful attack against the pool. As pooled mining in general is shrinking due to large manufacturers creating private farms, the potential revenue for the pool has gone down as expected. While the pool is still very profitable, the amount of time it would take to recover from an attack has increased due to the overall share of the network shrinking.
BTC Guild has, to date, never been successfully hacked. However, I have seen a rise in attack attempts, and things like Heartbleed/Shellshock which show that efforts are being put into compromising common Linux services if possible. Neither of those attacks had any affect on BTC Guild, but they were both reminders that under BTC Guild's own code, there are many services which could be a doorway into the pool's servers if a vulnerability was discovered.
One successful attack could cost close to a year of pool revenue, maybe more depending on what happens in the mining landscape over that period of time. If something else happened in that time (subsequent attack or regulation forcing closure), it would mean continuing to operate the pool beyond this point has cost me more money than it might potentially make in the rest of its lifetime.
2) US government/regulators are already taking stances against specific business types in Bitcoin, applying requirements which would be impossible for BTC Guild to operate under if they attempt to extend regulation into pooled mining, either directly or indirectly due to unclear definitions. Nobody will mine on a pool which requires them to provide personally identifiable information when they can change a single line in their configuration to point elsewhere.
Additionally, state regulators are starting to make noise about Bitcoin. New York is the first to publicly put anything forward, but there are 49 other states which can put their own spin on things. Due to the ability for states to establish a nexus for businesses dealing with their state's residents, it is a scary landscape to continue operating in.
I have no intention of leaving the US myself, and given the recent history of the US when it comes to online businesses, I don't feel safe simply moving the business legal entity to another country while continuing to live in the US myself.
Aquisition and Users's Privacy/Funds In the event that BTC Guild is acquired prior to closure, users will not have their mining history and withdrawal history transferred to the new owner. All balances up to the date of aquisition will be retained by myself, and a separate service will be made available to claim any funds owed. I am unwilling to compromise on this, because I refuse to do anything where it puts the users of the pool at risk of not receiving what they've earned under my watch.
Pool Recommendations and Advice For users looking for a new home for their miners, I highly recommend BitMinter, Eligius, and p2pool. I do not recommend Slush over any of those 3 options, and I actively encourage users to not use Discus Fish or Other smaller pools exist which are run by honest people, but due to their size, it is difficult to recommend them to the average miner.
Closing Words When I got into Bitcoin back in March of 2011, I never expected anything that we've seen over the last 3 and a half years. I had never built a computer before, never run a server beyond a Gentoo PC in a spare bedroom, and never setup a website that experienced even 0.1% of the traffic BTC Guild gets on an average day.
Bitcoin and BTC Guild have both radically changed my life. While I am closing BTC Guild, I still plan to remain a part of the Bitcoin community. I do believe, even in the face of over-regulation, that Bitcoin will continue to grow and become more useful and usable. I just feel that it is time to move on from BTC Guild, and take pride in the fact that BTC Guild's closure can show that not all Bitcoin businesses end with somebody stealing funds from their users, either by "getting hacked" or outright theft.

Luke-Jr is a seriously a super crazy person quotes gigathread.

Feel free to add your own, there is just so many. in no particular order:
slavery is still moral (unless prohibited by law, in which case it's the sin of disobedience).
If the intent is to simply prevent conception, even abstinence can be sinful within marriage.
Masturbation, or any sexual pleasure not ordered toward procreation, is always a grave sin
if you argue that God is allowing the sin, so we shouldn't stop it: consider that it may very well also be God's will that we intervene. Perhaps He is allowing the attempted rape/murder to take place specifically to give you the opportunity to stop it.
The fact that the liberal mass media has deceived the secularists into thinking Francis is the pope of that Church is another matter
As a general principle, it is moral for the State to execute criminals with due process, including heretics.
Logical impossibility. Marriage is by definition a relationship for reproduction, but gay relationships simply cannot do that.
By the way, the Sun really orbits the Earth, not vice-versa.
[he also has been posting in the geocentrism reddit but then deleting his posts: ]
I am not aware of any evidence that /Bitcoin engages in censorship.
04:25 luke-jr Bitcoin can very easily be banned.
04:26 luke-jr cjdelisle: if a law passes banning it, it is wrong
04:26 luke-jr nobody has a right to Bitcoin .
04:27 cjdelisle I know right from wrong and I don't need to consult the words of corrupt politicians and lawyers.
04:27 justmoon luke-jr: there are legal rights and natural rights. free speech is a natural right, so by that standard using bitcoin can never be morally wrong.
04:27 luke-jr "free speech" is not a right at all
04:28 luke-jr cjdelisle: disobedience is wrong .
04:28 cjdelisle luke-jr: how do you know?
04:28 luke-jr cjdelisle: the same way anyone can know morality: the Church teaches it .
04:29 lfm disobedience is absolutly required sometimes
04:30 luke-jr lfm: not the sin of disobedience, no.
04:30 midnightmagic civil disobedience is the duty of every citizen who lives under an unjust law
04:30 luke-jr midnightmagic: all laws are just by default
04:30 luke-jr an unjust law is one which contradicts a higher law.
04:30 luke-jr which banning Bitcoin does not.
04:30 midnightmagic the syrian people would disagree with you
04:31 luke-jr then they are wrong

the State does have the authority, and in some cases the duty, to execute heretics.
05:22 luke-jr lfm: protestantism is heresy
05:19 luke-jr it is legitimate to punish by death, someone who openly declares the popes to not be infallible on matters of faith and morals
Also a shady thing I didn't really remember he did:
Since Coiledcoin launched with merged mining, Luke Jr was able to use Eligius' combined hashing power to execute a 51% attack against the new block chain. Additionally, the Eligius-mined blocks contained no transactions, effectively slowing the function of the Coiledcoin network to a crawl.
Miners on Eligius suffered no monetary loss since merged mining does not affect the hashing power on the primary network and this is an excellent example of a pool operator performing merged mining without the consent of the miners.
Eligius miners were not consulted prior to the attack and it's been stated publicly by at least a few major players in Eligius' network that they do not approve of the attack. Eligius states that his major motivation was to prevent the damage caused by the pump-and-dump schemes that most of the alternate currencies typically represent - a large number of coins premined or mined by early adopters which get sold off rapidly, collapsing the altcoin's new economy and effectively destroying the project. He incorrectly referred to them as "pyramid schemes" though, in at least a few cases, he is probably correct as identifying some altcoins as "schemes" or "scams."
Even some miners (myself included) who agree with Luke Jr's assessment of the altcoin pump-and-dump scenarios disapprove of Eligius' actions since the attack happened without the consent of those actually responsible for it, even when such consent would likely have been given. There is, simply put, a great deal of resentment about not being asked or given any option.
That said, the effect seems to have been felt quite little by Eligius regardless of public opinion surrounding the fallout. At the time of the incident, Eligius was reporting combined hashrates of ~250GH/s and today is reporting hashrates upward of 440GH/s. However much this may have hurt public opinion, it certainly hasn't hurt business.
There is just infinitely more. Feel free to continue where I'm leaving off. Does the bitcoin community realize how literally crazy this guy is?

BIP65 Deployment Status at ~26%, Remind your Mining Pool to Upgrade

Pools with "YES" are now producing v4 blocks while pools with "NO" are not, pools with "PARTIAL" have produced v3 blocks after v4 blocks indicating they have only upgraded some of their nodes. Services that run a full node for transaction processing and users also need to upgrade otherwise they should wait for at least 6 confirmations.
Note: Any users running Bitcoin Core should upgrade to 0.11.2 the network, the network needs a lot more nodes running BIP65 compatible code. We should try and get a few thousand nodes upgraded before BIP65 takes effect.
Warning: Because XT has not yet merged BIP65 support, it may extend an invalid chain once 75% is reached, although it is unlikely an invalid chain will be produced at that point because CLTV is non-standard
